On this day in Yankees history – A-Rod ties Gehrig’s grand slam record

On June 12, 2012, Alex Rodriguez tied Lou Gehrig’s 74-year-old record when he hit his 23rd career grand slam in a 6-4 victory over Atlanta. The blast came in the eighth inning on a 3-2 pitch thrown by Jonny Venters.Β Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira and Curtis Granderson came around to tie the game at 4. Gehrig hit his 23 grand salami’s in 17 seasons, while A-Rod was in his 19th. It would be a year and three months until he would hit number 24 and pass the Iron Horse.

“It means a lot. It’s very special. This game is very, very difficult. If you’re not going to enjoy these great moments, then it’s not any fun. Lou Gehrig is not only one of the all time greats, but he’s one of ours.” – A-Rod

“It’s hard to fathom what he’s been able to do in his career. To be mentioned with Lou Gehrig, that’s special.” – Joe Girardi
