TAMPA — Coming off a sweep of the Seattle Mariners, the Yankees were unable to carry over the momentum to Tampa, as they were defeated by the Rays, 2-1, at Tropicana Field.
CC Sabathia did his best to give his team the win, giving up just two runs (one earned), but the New York offense could not muster up anything against a slew of Tampa relievers.
Sabathia did give up nine hits, but he did strikeout four Rays, to go with shutout relief work from Adam Warren and Luis Cessa.
Drew Stanek was the “starter” for the Rays, but it was Ryan Yarbrough that was credited with the win and pitched the most innings.
The first run of the game scored on an overturned call. After Willy Adames singled, Giancarlo Stanton came up throwing to try and nab Daniel Robertson at the plate.
While the call was initially out, replay overturned the call and gave the Rays their first run of the game.
Tampa scored its second run in the fifth inning, with a CJ Cron sacrifice fly scoring Matt Duffy.
The Yankees got their only offense in the seventh inning off of Chaz Roe. With Gleyber Torres and Brett Gardner on, Aaron Judge singled to drive in Torres.

Though there was just an out in the inning, Stanton and Didi Gregorius were unable to tie up the score.
Sergio Romo shut down the Yankees for his fifth save of the season in the ninth.
Notably, Brett Gardner made his return to the lineup after missing five days. He accumulated two hits in the loss.
