Game 108: Teixeira’s 2 Gets Hughes Win 2

Mark Teixeira sets a record as his 2 home runs came from both sides of the plate for the all-time record 12th time in his career.

Phil Hughes was the best he has been this season in what could have been his biggest start of the season. On the second game of the doubleheader, Ivan Nova made his return to The Show and pitched a gem, leading to questions of whether he deserved the spot in the rotation over the then-struggling Hughes. Tonight he showed what he is capable of and pitched 6 innings of shutout baseball. The rain shortened this gem of Hughes and created a win for the record and a semi-welcomed dilemma of too many good starters.

The downside of the 6-man rotation is the lessened use of CC Sabathia, who the Yankees need on the mound as much as he can. This may be a situation of odd-man out and the unfortunate job of Joe Girardi to inform Hughes that despite his improvement, he would be better utilized out of the bullpen.
