Game 113: Settled For Second

With a 3-game series and the AL East lead tied between the Yankees and Red Sox, one of the two best in the majors would emerge as the sole owner of the AL East lead. With the first 2 games split between the teams, tonight’s game would determine the AL East leader.

For the Yankees, Freddy Garcia took the mound and lasted just 5 innings and allowed 1 run. Josh Beckett took the mound for Boston and matched Garcia’s 1 run as he lasted 6 innings.

A solo home run with 2 outs in the 7th by Brett Gardner put the wheels in motion for a modified process towards the closer we have grown to depend on and expect perfection from, Mariano Rivera.

Then 8th inning man, now 7th inning man, Rafael Soriano pitched a perfect inning following the home run. All-Star relief pitcher and the 8th inning man, David Robertson pitched a scoreless inning with 2 strikeouts. Unfortunately, Mariano Rivera lost the lead in the 9th inning and the game was lost in the 10th with Phil Hughes on the mound on the game-winning hit by Josh Reddick following a double by David Ortiz.

The Yankees lose the tie of the AL East and settle for second place, for now.
