Game 114: Tough Loss To Swallow

With the tying run on first base in the form of Curtis Granderson, Angels closer Jordan Walden attempted the “Jeff Nelson” move and picked off Granderson to end the game, 6-4, in a shocking way.

The other shocking part of this defeat was that in a 4-4 tie in the top of the 9th, Bobby Abreu hit the game-winning two-run home run off of Mariano Rivera.

The Yankees were trailing 4-2 before Dan Haren was taken out of the game and the bullpen surrendered the 2 runs that tied the game on a two-run single by Derek Jeter.

A.J. Burnett went 6 innings and surrendered 4 runs, all in the 6th inning. The majority of the runs scored after the runner on 1st base tagged and advanced on a fly ball, which is not too common of occurrence despite it taking place twice in tonight’s game. It led to a walk of Maicer Izturis that led to 3 of the 4 runs scoring in what may not have been one of Burnett’s worse outings this season.
