New York Yankees 9 — Boston Red Sox 6

Fired up and fighting, the Yankees take the three-game series with tonight’s 9-6 win over the Boston Red Sox.

Despite CC Sabathia struggling in the first inning and giving the Yankees a two-run deficit to work against, the game seemed to pick up steam in the second inning. With Ryan Dempster on the mound, the Yankees did get a base runner on the first inning but they would not score. But, it did let Alex Rodriguez lead off the second inning.

The first pitch went behind the legs of the Yankees third baseman. The next two are inside pitches. The last one hits Rodriguez and home plate umpire Brian O’Nora emerged from behind the catcher to issue warnings. Notably, the umpire chose to not eject Ryan Dempster from the game despite four pitches that appeared to have some malicious intent. This set off Joe Girardi. The Yankees manager erupted from the dugout and had more than choice words for the umpire, earning an immediate ejection.

Seemingly fired up, the Yankees would make Dempster pay for the free base runner. Curtis Granderson would hit a double to put two runners in scoring position. Eduardo Nunez would hit a single to bring in the first Yankees run and the tying run would come in on Lyle Overbay’s sacrifice fly to left field. Hitting Alex Rodriguez would just begin to haunt Ryan Dempster.

In the third inning, Ichiro and Robinson Cano would hit a pair of singles to start it. Ichiro advanced on a fly out to right field but Alex Rodriguez would make it productive. The controversy-surrounded third baseman would bring in the go-ahead run with a ground out.

CC Sabathia would lose the lead he received. After a lead off double, a wild pitch let Shane Victorino move to third. David Ortiz grounded out and the game was tied again. Entering the sixth inning, the Yankees would trail by a score of 6-3.

But for a batter, the ultimate payback would ensue.

Alex Rodriguez would hit his second home run of the season to center field off the pitcher that hit him earlier. He would take an extra few seconds to enjoy this home run just a little more. With one out, Eduardo Nunez and Lyle Overbay hit a pair of singles. Chris Stewart would get walked and that would be the end for Ryan Dempster. Left-handed reliever Drake Britton would come in with the bases loaded to face Brett Gardner. The speedy center fielder would hit a deep triple just shy of the bullpens in right center field. The three-run triple gave the Yankees a 7-6 lead.

The Yankees would get insurance runs in the seventh and ninth inning and with a three-run lead, the Yankees turned to a face that had not been seen for some time, Mariano Rivera. The Yankees closer did not see the mound since blowing three consecutive saves against the Detroit Tigers.

After getting the first two outs on the ground, David Ortiz would hit a single through the shifted infield. Jonny Gomes would manage to walk but Jarrod Saltalamacchia would fly out to left field and the Yankees can take the biggest victory of the game, the win. Which will be important on the push towards a possible postseason berth.

CC Sabathia got the win to put him back over .500 but his 5.1 innings of six-run baseball is not acceptable. He continues to walk too many as he walked five and struck out five. The strong bullpen (Kelley, Logan, Robertson, Rivera) went 3.2 innings, allowing two hits, walking two and striking out five.

Win – CC Sabathia (11-10)

Loss – Ryan Dempster (6-9)

Save – Mariano Rivera (36)
