Curtis Granderson achieved something no Yankee ever accomplished in tonight’s 7-6 win over the Minnesota Twins to split the 4-game series in the Bronx.
Curtis Granderson was the star of the night as he went a perfect 5 for 5. But the big part of this perfect night was the first 3 hits in the 1st, 2nd, and 4th inning. The first 3 hits by the Yankees centerfielder were home runs, two solo home runs and a two-run home run. Another milestone reached was by Derek Jeter, who tied with Dave Winfield for 18th place on the all-time hits list with 3,110.The home run show, that also included Mark Teixeira’s first home run of the season, overshadowed another poor outing by the Yankees starting pitcher Phil Hughes.
The offense was in full force and Phil Hughes needed every bit of it. Hughes went 5.1 innings and gave up 6 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts. The 1st inning was rougher than it might have been thanks to an error by Eduardo Nunez. The error led to 4 unearned runs that were quickly overcome in two innings. He was pulled from the game soon after a two-run home run by Ryan Doumit. Rafael Soriano and David Robertson had scoreless innings to build the bridge to Mariano Rivera to take the win and split the series.
