Game 141: O’s Take 2nd Long Game

Following yesterday’s game which took a total of 7 hours, (4 hours in rain, 3 hours of game) the Yankees and the Orioles were taking the field again in less than 12 hours for a day game. In this 11-inning affair, the Yankees fell to the Orioles 5-4.

A.J. Burnett took the mound and did not have a great start. His control was not there and his sharp curve was far too sharp, which happens to be a bad thing if the catcher cannot keep it from getting away. Over 6 innings, Burnett gave up 4 runs on 7 hits with 7 strikeouts (this statistic is weakened by the fact that 5 of these strikeouts were of Chris Davis and Mark Reynold, constant strikeout victims) and 3 wild pitches. He gave up all 4 of the runs in the first 3 innings and managed to settle down and keep the game at a 4-4 tie.

The Yankees runs came in pairs as Alex Rodriguez drove in 2 runs in the 1st inning with a double and Jesus Montero drove in the other 2 runs in the 4th inning with a single to tie the game at 4.

unfortunately for the Yankees, resting regulars is a necessity as a key error and an inability to keep the Orioles from stealing bases led to the Yankees loss. Hector Noesi pitched after the 9th inning and ended up allowing a Mark Reynolds single to drive in the game-winning run.
