Game 148: Yankees Lose in 12

On the last game before the Yankees last off day of the regular season, the Yankees went 12 innings in a losing effort, 2-1, thanks to Luis Rodriguez’s (.176 hitter entering tonight) walk-off home run.

The Yankees offense struggled to make the most of long at-bats against the Mariners’ Jason Vargas. Nick Swisher was the only Yankee to score off of Vargas with a solo home run to tie the game at 1. The Yankees have a habit of making mediocre pitchers look amazing and they did that again. Vargas pitched 6.2 innings and allowed just the 1 run on 3 hits.

Ivan Nova pitched effectively as well. Ivan Nova pitched 7.1 innings and held the Mariners to 1 run as well but he walked a little more than usual as he walked 4 and struck out 5. David Robertson helped Nova out of a jam after a runner reached third in the 8th with a short fly out and a strikeout to hold the game tied. Cory Wade gave up the game-winning home run as he left a changeup high in the zone and that is easy to hit with that miss on location.

The one bat that could not seem to be silenced by most of the Yankees pitchers was that of second baseman Luis Rodriguez, hitting 8th in the lineup. Rodriguez had 3 hits tonight, 2 doubles and the home run that won it for the Mariners.

The Yankees will not face mediocre hitters or pitchers often when they face more credible teams but these games against sub-par teams need to be won, especially when the teams after you in the standings lose.

  1. Pathetic offense, Yanks looked to be swinging at first pitch so they could get the game over instead of getting to Vargas. C'mon man, this guy has a 7.26 or so ERA against Yankees. Didn't help that when Nova got tired, Girardi goes to Robertson to get a couple of outs but c'mon, he shoulda stuck with Robertson a little longer before going to Soriano, stick with Soriano once he's on the mound before going to Logan. How many pitchers did you think you could bring in before one didn't get the job done?? Pitiful use of bullpen by Girardi again–that led to many losses last year, he ain't learned a damn thing yet. It's not a contest to use the most players, no offense on field–put in some NEW BATS at the plate.

  2. They actually worked into deep counts but didn't manage to get on base or make use of the batters when they did get on base, I believe Vargas was near 70 pitches by the 4th inning. He probably didn't stick with Robertson for a full inning because of the 30 pitches he threw the previous night. Girardi probably could have and should have used Chavez earlier when there was a bigger scoring opportunity. Sometimes Girardi crunches numbers too often but we're atop the AL East for a reason. And with what we have and the schedule we've got ahead of us, what new bats could there possibly be that you would want besides the team we put in?

  3. With the exception of Jeter and Swisher most Yanks swung at first pitches-Granderson, Cano, Texiera tried to work to get his pitch to hit but look at how fast the at bats for Yankees went, Jones walked once cause he didn't get any strikes to swing at, when Jones was replaced with Gardner, at least Brett tried to foul off pitches and get a good pitch. Montero looked lost in his at bats, third at bat should've been a pinch hitter, maybe Posada or Romine. Starters looked tired, uninterested in winning to me. If you're gonna run a reliever in for just one or two hitters, NO WAY can they be tired while other players play every day and AREN'T TIRED? 30 PITCHES? They throw half that many for warmups when Girardi calls the bullpen. Joe pulled relievers last year too early in many games just like he's doing again, get some work out of'em. You wouldn't pull a starter who's breathing fire and getting outs unless pitch count is astronomical, why pull a reliever if he's giving you the same performance?

  4. Girardi wants to see what Montero is capable of, that's why he stayed with him.. he has said he wants to see Montero against lefties and righties to see what he can do. This was just a night to show that he's still in fact a rookie, it was probably his worst game since getting called up.

Relievers are not conditioned like the other players that play every day. You don't want to burn out your bullpen when there are more games ahead. Starters and relievers are two different types of pitchers. Relief pitchers are not built for multiple innings. Times have changed.
