Game 15: Comeback in a Big Way

New York Yankees 15 — Boston Red Sox 9

In 3 innings, the Yankees turned a 9-1 deficit into a 15-9 victory in today’s win over the Boston Red Sox.

In a game that seemed out of hand, thanks to a terrible outing by starting pitcher Freddy Garcia, the offense bailed out some very poor pitching. In 1.2 innings, Garcia surrendered 5 runs on 7 hits. David Phelps would do an average job in relief but gave the Yankees innings as he went 4 giving up 3 runs on 6 hits. Once the Yankees did get the lead with their outstanding offense, the Yankees got 3 scoreless innings from Rafael Soriano, Boone Logan, and Cody Eppley to complete the shocking comeback.

The Yankees offense was stifled by Red Sox starting pitcher Felix Doubront. The Yankees were held to just 1 run over 6 innings as they couldn’t solve Doubront. Unlike the Yankees bullpen, the Red Sox bullpen was far from reliable. Two pitchers, including former Yankee Alfredo Aceves gave up runs without recording an out. Aceves, the losing pitcher, gave up 5 runs on 2 hits and 4 walks. In the 7th inning, the Yankees scored 7 runs on a grand slam by Nick Swisher and a three-run home run by Mark Teixeira, his second of the game. This was also the all-time most 13th game with home runs from both sides of the plate. Nick Swisher would later deliver the game-leading two-run double in the 8th in another 7-run inning. The 6 RBIs that Swisher got today gave him 20 RBIs for the season. In 3 innings of relief by Boston, 6 pitchers gave up 14 runs on 11 hits and 5 walks.
