Game 17: Yu Dominates

New York Yankees 0 — Texas Rangers 2

In a battle of pitchers from Japan, Yu Darvish shut down the Yankees in a 2-0 loss to the Texas Rangers.

Hiroki Kuroda took the mound for the Yankees and didn’t have that bad of an outing, but he was outdone by newcomer Yu Darvish. In 6.2 innings, he gave up just 2 runs on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts. He did have a rude opening to his start as Ian Kinsler led off the bottom of the 1st inning with a home run. He later gave up a single following a walk and a stolen base that led to the second run. Usually two runs is good enough to earn a win but this pitching duel went the Rangers way.

Yu Darvish dominated the Yankees offense. In 8.1 scoreless innings, he struck out 10. He gave up two doubles, one to the hot Derek Jeter and one to Robinson Cano. He did get into some jams and escaped them. With the bases-loaded and no outs, he struck out Curtis Granderson and got Alex Rodriguez to ground into a double play. Their final scoring opportunity came after they finally got Darvish out of the game. Unfortunately, Raul Ibanez swung at the first pitch of closer Joe Nathan and ended the game with a double play.

Win – Yu Darvish (3-0)

Loss – Hiroki Kuroda (1-3)

Save – Joe Nathan (5)
