Detroit Tigers 6 — New York Yankees 7
Wildness wins it for the Yankees in walk-off fashion with a score of 7-6 over the Detroit Tigers.
Reigning American League MVP and Cy Young award winner Justin Verlander faced the Yankees and they managed to get to the hard-throwing righty for 5 runs over 7 hits in 6 innings. The big offense came on Alex Rodriguez’s fourth home run in the 4th inning and Russell Martin’s home run to right-center for two runs in the 5th inning. Verlander remains winless in the New Yankee Stadium.
Ivan Nova took the mound for the Yankees and struggled, which is unusual for a pitcher that hasn’t had a losing decision of his last 15 decisions, a streak that remains intact thanks to the no decision he received. In 5.1 innings, Nova gave up 6 runs on 11 hits. There were times that Nova showed his crunch time capabilities as a run-scoring triple in the early part of the game was done with no outs and he kept the runner from scoring with a strikeout and two groundouts.
With the game tied at 6 in the 9th inning. The Yankees had a walk by Derek Jeter followed by a walk on a wild pitch to Curtis Granderson that let Jeter get to 3rd. Then with Alex Rodriguez at the plate, the eventual losing pitcher Brayan Villarreal fell behind again before a passed ball brought home the final run without a single hit.
Win – Mariano Rivera (1-1)
