Game 22: Close Win For Kuroda

Baltimore Orioles 1 — New York Yankees 2

Two runs was enough for Hiroki Kuroda in tonight’s 2-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

The Yankees offense was barely able to muster anything against the Orioles’ starting pitcher Jason Hammel. The Yankees lone offense came from Eric Chavez. The Yankees third baseman hit a two-run home run in the 2nd inning and this proved to be just enough. Mark Teixeira was on base for Chavez’s home run as one of his two hits in tonight’s game.

Hiroki Kuroda went 7 innings and allowed just 1 run on 4 hits. He pitched effectively as he used just 87 pitches in this outing. A huge play in Kuroda’s outing took place in the 7th inning. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Kuroda threw a passed ball that got by Russell Martin. When Martin recovered, he threw it to Kuroda, who got the potential game-tying run out at home to end the inning. His 7 innings of work put the beginning to the bridge to the bullpen that the Yankees envision for games. David Robertson came in for the 8th inning and was perfect as he struck out the side to pass the game on to Mariano Rivera. The all-time leader in saves had a scoreless 9th inning and shut the door in this close encounter between AL East teams.
