Game 3: Absent Offense

New York Yankees (0-3) 0 — Tampa Bay Rays (3-0) 3

The Yankees offense was nowhere to be found in the 3-0 loss in the finale of the opening series with the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Yankees turned to Phil Hughes in an attempt to get their first win of the season. In 4.2 innings, Hughes allowed just 2 runs on 5 hits including a home run to the powerful Carlos Pena, driving in a total of 7 runs this series. The Yankees pitching was not bad today but the Yankees offense was.

Rookie of the Year Jeremy Hellickson held the Yankees to just 3 hits in 8.2 innings. All of the hits were extra-base hits but they were scattered throughout the game. Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, and Nick Swisher each hit a double.

Win – Jeremy Hellickson (1-0)
