Tampa Bay Rays 4 — New York Yankees 1
David Robertson’s ‘Houdini’ act was unsuccessful in tonight’s 4-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.
A close 1-0 game was started by rookie David Phelps. In his second major league start, Phelps went 4.2 innings with no runs on 3 hits and 4 walks. He left in the 5th inning with a two-out, bases-loaded situation as Boone Logan took over and kept the one-run lead with a strikeout of Matt Joyce. A trio of relievers made up the bridge to what is now the new closer for this season, David Robertson. The current Yankees closer took the mound after a 25-pitch save last night and the consecutive appearances may have played a factor in tonight’s game.
A sight that Yankees fans are familiar with is Robertson creating his own jam and escaping it, dubbing him ‘Houdini.’ He did this in last night’s game and managed to finish off the game and get his first save of the season. Two singles and a walk and the bases were loaded for ‘Houdini’ to act. Unfortunately this time, ‘Houdini’ didn’t escape as he got one strikeout but ended up surrendering 4 runs on a sacrifice fly and a three-run home run, the game-winning runs.
The Yankees offense came out of the gates hot but were settled down quickly by Rays starter Jeff Niemann. The lone run put on the scoreboard was on a run-scoring double by Robinson Cano in the 1st inning. The Yankees were silenced in big situations as they went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position.
