Game 35: Painful Win

New York Yankees 8 — Baltimore Orioles 5

This 8-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles is difficult to call a win with the injuries that we came out with.

A pair of injuries occurred in tonight’s game and one injury became evident in the 9th inning. The first injury that occurred was to Ivan Nova. The injury likely occurred on a comebacker off the bat of Nick Markakis in the 3rd inning. It was alarming but it was not a huge concern until he fielded his position in the 6th inning and moved with a notable limp. So in 5.1 innings of work, Nova gave up 5 runs on 7 hits. A problem is that 4 of the 7 hits were extra base hits (3 doubles, 1 triple, and a home run). The Yankees bullpen pieced the remaining innings of the game together very well. Boone Logan was very impressive as he struck out all 3 batters that he faced. The odd events began when Boone Logan and Cory Wade combined for the 8th inning. Rafael Soriano, not David Robertson, was warming up for the 9th inning work.  Soriano successfully got the save but what was later revealed is that Robertson has been suffering from a ribcage injury for the past 2 days.

Mark Teixeira’s slow start may be coming to an end as he came through with a double and a tie-breaking two-run home run in the 7th inning. Curtis Granderson also hit his team-leading 12th home run in this game. The Yankees offense appeared to be on the right track with the bat as three Yankees had multiple hits, and many for extra bases as well. Unfortunately, Raul Ibanez was hit by a pitch in the 9th inning that forced him to exit the game.

Win – David Phelps (1-1)
