Game 43: Just Enough To Win

Kansas City Royals 2 — New York Yankees 3

Timely hitting and inches played a huge factor in tonight’s 3-2 win over the Kansas City Royals.

The Yankees struggles with runners in scoring position has been brought to attention regularly and many believed the struggles would continue. However, in the 5th inning, an error, a hit by pitch, and a bunt intended to sacrifice became a single to load the bases for The Captain, Derek Jeter. The Captain came through with a run-scoring single as the second hit of the night with runners in scoring position (Wise bunt single was the first). Robinson Cano also made hitting with runners in scoring position irrelevant as he hit a solo home run, his 5th of the season.

Phil Hughes had an effective 6 innings of work tonight to build upon his previous good starts. He only gave up a pair of runs, one on a solo home run by Jeff Francoeur and one on a run-scoring double by Humberto Quintero down the right field line. The bullpen was a puzzle put together by manager Joe Girardi. It took 4 pitchers for the 2 innings bridge to closer Rafael Soriano. With the game-tying run on 3rd base, Alcides Escobar hit a ground ball to Alex Rodriguez, who delivered a rocket to first baseman Mark Teixeira that beat Escobar by inches.

Win – Phil Hughes (4-5)

Loss – Luke Hochevar (3-5)

Save – Rafael Soriano (3)
