New York Yankees 6 — Oakland Athletics 3
Three home runs backed Nova in tonight’s 6-3 win over the Oakland Athletics.
The Yankees offense got to Oakland starter Tyson Ross fast and with a trio of blasts. In 4.1 innings of work, Ross gave up 6 runs, 3 earned, on 11 hits. With 2 outs in the 3rd, Robinson Cano reached base on a missed catch by outfielder Coco Crisp that extended the inning. The next batter, Mark Teixeira, made Ross pay for the error as he hit a home run to deep right. In the 5th inning, Robinson Cano didn’t let Crisp play a factor in his next at-bat as he hit a solo home run to center and Nick Swisher went the opposite way for a two-run home run that knocked Ross out of the game. Despite 12 hits, 4 of them being doubles and 3 being the home runs, the Yankees hit just 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position.
Ivan Nova benefited from the run support in his strong 7 innings of work. 2 of the 3 runs that Nova gave up came on home runs by Josh Reddick and Kila Ka’aihue. Nova started with some trouble in the 5th inning with a single and a double to open it. However, an amazing catch by Curtis Granderson to deep center produced the only run on a sacrifice fly by Kurt Suzuki. Boone Logan had a perfect inning to set up the save for Rafael Soriano and win for Nova.
Win – Ivan Nova (5-2)
Loss – Tyson Ross (2-5)
