Game 47: Kuroda Throws A Gem

New York Yankees 2 — Oakland Athletics 0

Kuroda blanked the weak-hitting A’s in today’s 2-0 win.

Entering today’s start, Hiroki Kuroda was 0-4 on the road away from Yankee Stadium. But today he looked like he was at home. The most significant threat of today’s outing was in the 7th inning with two on and just one out. A strikeout and a fly out cleared him of the jam and put him well on his way to victory. In 8 shutout innings, Kuroda walked 1 and allowed just 4 hits on 104 pitches. Rafael Soriano closed the door and got the save in today’s win.

The Yankees offensive woes were evident again. In 6.2 innings, Oakland starter Tom Milone gave up 8 hits but just 2 runs. One of the runs came on a solo home run by Andruw Jones in the 2nd inning. The Yankees had a tremendous run-scoring opportunity in the 1st inning with the bases loaded but a pair of pop ups by Robinson Cano and Nick Swisher became a reminder of the struggles the offense has had with runners in scoring position. The Yankees hit a dreadful 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position as they could not find the swing that would seize the prime opportunities presented before them. Derek Jeter’s lead off single in the 1st put him ahead of George Brett on the all-time hits list.
