Game 48: Back & Forth Goes Halo’s Way

New York Yankees 8 — Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 9

A hanging changeup became a walk-off home run in tonight’s 9-8 loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

This game had moments that the Yankees appeared to have the advantage and times where they didn’t. Early in the 1st inning, Jered Weaver was forced to exit early due to what was revealed to be a lower back injury. The Yankees also took advantage of some unusual lapses in basic defense as a pair of errors allowed 2 of 3 first inning runs. The Yankees got rid of a 3-run deficit late in the 7th inning, highlighted by a game-tying, two-run double by Russell Martin. Unfortunately, the Yankees could not take advantage of the bases-loaded opportunity they had in the 9th inning against Angels closer Jordan Walden.

Phil Hughes difficulties reappeared in his 5.1 innings of work. On 11 hits, Hughes surrendered 7 runs including a home run to outfielder, and touted prospect, Mike Trout. David Phelps and Boone Logan put together scoreless appearances after the Yankees tied the game but Cory Wade’s hanging changeup was delivered into the left-field bleachers to send the Angels home happy in a walk-off fashion as the Yankees five-game winning streak was put to an end.

Win – Jordan Walden (2-1)

Loss – Cory Wade (0-1)
