Game 50: Early Outburst Holds Up

New York Yankees 6 — Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 5

Early run support for Nova was enough to get the win in tonight’s 6-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Early offense occurred by both teams as starting pitchers Ivan Nova and Ervin Santana struggled. Nova was faced with an early jam with the bases loaded by the first three batters but only gave up one run. Later, Nova had a problem facing the hot-hitting Mark Trumbo as he hit his 10th home run of the season in the 4th inning and a two-run double put 5 runs on the scoreboard. It became clear that Nova’s control was not all there as there were many location mistakes that created many of these bad situations. Cory Wade had a perfect 1.1 innings of work with 3 strikeouts and Rafael Soriano shut the door with his 6th save of the season.

Ervin Santana faced similar difficulties but didn’t escape it with minimal damage. Following a Russell Martin walk and a Derek Jeter single, Curtis Granderson took a 3-2 fastball deep to left field for his 16th home run of the season in the 3rd inning. This inning snowballed for Santana after he hit Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano made him pay with his 8th home run of the season, putting together a five-run 3rd inning. Finally, a misplayed line drive off the wall in center field let Raul Ibanez get his first triple of the season in the 6th. Nick Swisher followed with some situational hitting as he knew a fly ball would bring in Ibanez and did just that.

Win – Ivan Nova (6-2)

Loss – Hisanori Takahashi (0-2)

Save – Rafael Soriano (6)
