Boston Red Sox 11 — New York Yankees 1

Yankees give up three home runs in tonight’s 11-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox.

The Yankees turned to right-hander Phil Hughes in the middle game of three with the rival Red Sox. The 26-year-old Hughes had some indicators of bad things to come when the first two batters started with 3-0 counts. Hughes would escape the first two innings unscathed, but needed about 42 pitches.

Home runs and Phil Hughes, unfortunately, go hand-in-hand.

Hughes led off the third inning by allowing a double and a single, a second double would bring in the first run before Hughes would get the first out by strikeout. With the right-handed Mike Napoli following left-handed power hitter David Ortiz; the Yankees chose to go for the “favorable matchup” and intentionally walked Ortiz to face Napoli. On a 2-2 fastball, Napoli would take Hughes deep for the grand slam, putting the Red Sox ahead by five. Hughes would finish by striking out the side but some major damage was done.

The five-run third inning and an excessive amount of pitches likely ended Hughes’ night when it did. In 4.1 innings, Hughes used 100 pitches and allowed five runs on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

The Yankees lone run off of Felix Doubront and the Red Sox came on a sacrifice fly by Chris Stewart in the fourth inning. The Red Sox completely shut down the Yankees offense in tonight’s game. The bullpen (Junichi Tazawa, Craig Breslow, and Koji Uehara) pitched three perfect innings with four strikeouts.

Preston Claiborne continued to pitch impressively out of the bullpen with 1.2 scoreless innings. His ERA is now at 0.55.

Adam Warren would be the sacrificial lamb of the bullpen as he was left to endure the rest of the drubbing in this game. In the eighth inning, outfielder Daniel Nava would take Warren deep for a three-run home run and to send Yankees fans from the stadium early. Warren would give up three more runs in the ninth, including a home run to shortstop Stephen Drew. Adam Warren would finish with three innings, allowing six runs on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Chris Stewart exited the game in the fifth inning with dehydration.
