Boston Red Sox 3 — New York Yankees 0

Rain wasn’t necessary to dampen the Yankees bats in tonight’s 3-0 rain-shortened loss to the Boston Red Sox. The game ended in the sixth inning.

Undefeated Clay Buchholz took the mound for Boston and was true to form. Through five innings, Buchholz allowed just two hits, one an infield hit. The Yankees could not get anything started. In the third inning, a leadoff single by catcher Austin Romine (entered hitting 4-for-40) almost got erased by a line out, double play but the first baseman Mike Napoli dropped the attempt for it. But the double play would take place anyway on the next batter, the unusual 5-6-3 double play (infielders were in an unusual setup due to the shift put on for Robinson Cano).

Hiroki Kuroda took the mound for the Yankees and the way he was pitching this season, he was more than up to the task of taking on the Red Sox. In the second inning, two Red Sox batters got on but Kuroda got out of the inning with the game still scoreless. A pair of singles would start the fourth inning and Mike Napoli would get the productive out needed to get the lead.

Then, in the fifth inning, in the blink of an eye, shortstop Jose Iglesias jumped on the first pitch of the inning for a home run to give the Red Sox a two-run lead. David Ortiz would start the sixth inning with a home run of his own to give the Yankees a three-run lead. It would seem that this home run broke the clouds as rain would follow soon after and the delay would begin.

A 45-minute delay would take place and Hiroki Kuroda’s night would end with it. In 5.1 innings, Kuroda allowed three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Boone Logan would take over and the baserunner would get caught stealing and a strikeout would make for a very short continuation to the game. The rain would return and the night would be ended.

Austin Romine started tonight’s game but Chris Stewart was supposed to start. He continued to exhibit symptoms of dehydration and was a late scratch to tonight’s game.
