New York Mets 4 — New York Yankees 5
Russell Martin hits two big home runs, the second being the game-winning home run in the 5-4 win today over the New York Mets, completing a sweep in the Subway Series.
Andy Pettitte had early struggles in a 36-pitch 2nd inning. Three hits, two walks, and an error gave the Mets an early 3-run lead. These 3 runs were the only runs allowed by the veteran lefty through 6 innings of work. Pettitte’s start appeared to have been forced to end after he caught a comeback ground ball to his pitching hand off of Scott Hairston. He managed to finish the inning but it likely played a big role in putting an end to his day. After the Yankees got the lead, Rafael Soriano came in for the save and gave up back-to-back doubles and surrendered the lead. Boone Logan entered to finish off the inning and would later be rewarded with the win.
For 6 innings, the Yankees were held off the scoreboard by starting pitcher Jonathon Niese. With 2 outs in the 7th, Niese got Andruw Jones to hit to third baseman David Wright in what should have ended the inning but a throwing error extended the inning. With the extra out, Russell Martin made the Mets pay as he hit a two-run home run just deep enough to put the Yankees within one. Four singles in the 8th off of reliever Bobby Parnell tied the game and put them ahead. The Mets bullpen managed to keep the lead to just one as they also made a comeback in the 9th. However, the Mets bullpen showed that they are clearly a tremendous weakness to this team as Jon Rauch faced Russell Martin to open the 9th. Five sliders and the Yankees were walking off on a home run to left field to send Yankees fans happy and with bragging rights over a sweep of the Subway Series.
Win – Boone Logan (1-0)
