Russell Martin’s back went bad last night so Francisco Cervelli was behind the plate. Joba Chamberlain is on the DL and Hector Noesi was sent down after pitching 6 amazing innings last night, the pecking order of the bullpen moves up. Jorge Posada was unavailable as he stayed with his son.
These events called for a big night from the supposed #2 starter, A.J. Burnett. Unfortunately, the 1st inning was a sign of bad things to come as we opened the game trailing 3-0 before Derek Jeter even had his first attempt approaching 3,000. Burnett ended up surrendering a total of 8 runs, 7 earned over 5.2 innings.
Derek Jeter did hit a double tonight to bring him within 11 of 3,000. Unfortunately, in a big at-bat when he had a chance to reduce the countdown to 10, he grounded into a double play to end a rally late in the game.
The injured Yankees roster could not put the pieces together to slow the Red Sox offense or put together enough offense too.
