Game 60: 7 in 7th Sweeps Bombers

Despite the rain delay, CC Sabathia did something the previous 2 Yankees starters could not do, hold the Red Sox scoreless in the 1st inning. The offense thanked their big lefty for not putting them in a hole by delivering a two-run home run by Curtis Granderson, his 18th of the season.

Sabathia cruised through 6 innings but the 7th inning came and that is one of his hardest innings to pitch, usually because this is an inning when most starters reach their end and would turn the game to the bullpen.

On a ground ball down the right field line, deflected by Mark Teixeira, Nick Swisher misplayed the ball and it rolled past him all the way to turn a simple single into a run-scoring triple. Eventually the game would be tied and Sabathia’s good outing turned very ugly. By the end of the 7th inning, Sabathia was no longer in the game and 7 runs scored to put the Yankees in a huge late-game deficit.

Derek Jeter was able to get a single in the 7th, career hit 2990. He is now 10 hits away from 3000.
