Game 67: The Streak Ends

Atlanta Braves 4 — New York Yankees 3

The Yankees had opportunities to continue their winning ways but fell short in tonight’s 4-3 loss to the Atlanta Braves, ending their winning streak at 10.

A sharp line drive at Mark Teixeira off of the bat of Jason Heyward brought in the game-winning run in the 6th inning. Hiroki Kuroda allowed 4 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks through 7 innings. The 4th inning could have been bad as two runs scored but a third run was taken off the scoreboard as Jason Heyward was thrown at 3rd base by Curtis Granderson before the third run reached home on a very nice play by the Yankees center fielder. The Yankees pitching was able to keep the deficit to just one as Boone Logan and David Robertson relieved Kuroda with two scoreless innings but the Yankees offense could not rally back.

The Yankees offense came out strong in the 2nd inning as a single and a double let Nick Swisher, returning to the lineup after missing 2 games with an injury, to bring them both in with a two-run double to give the Yankees an early lead. Their third run of the game came in on an error by Chipper Jones but the Yankees had a number of opportunities that they didn’t take advantage of. In the 5th inning, after consecutive walks with 2 outs, Nick Swisher hit a single to right field and Jason Heyward threw out the lead runner, Mark Teixeira, at home on what I considered an ill-advised attempt at scoring on Heyward, who has been credited with having a strong arm in right field. The Yankees also had another opportunity with runners on 2nd and 3rd with the Braves likely conceding the run on most hits but Chipper Jones was able to get Curtis Granderson at home and help the Braves escape another jam in what could have been the tying play. The Yankees offensive woes were clear as they were 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position and could not come through in the big situations as the 10-game winning streak ends there in tonight’s tough loss.
