In a day where the temperature reached the 90’s, the bats were just as hot. Phil Hughes could not get things going in just 4.1 innings of work. 4 of the 6 hits Hughes gave up were home runs as he was hit for 6 runs on 6 hits. Phil Hughes pitching style has a high tendency for fly balls and that would also mean that the home run is a possibility as well. In fact, in all but one of Hughes’ starts, he has given up at least one home run. Cody Eppley continues to have solid appearances in relief as he held the Braves off with a scoreless inning. Clay Rapada had an outstanding 1.1 innings of work when he struck out every batter he faced. The back end of the relief in today’s game surrendered 4 innings in 2.1 innings of work.
The Yankees offense did get started in a great way as Derek Jeter took the first pitch from Tommy Hanson over the right field wall and took part in showing just what would be going on in today’s game. In Tommy Hanson’s 5 innings of work, he surrendered as many home runs as Phil Hughes. The flaw in this is that all of the home runs the Yankees managed to hit were solo home runs. The Yankees made it clear that they could hit home runs but they could not find the hit they needed to and hitting into rally-killing double plays when they are in a huge opportunity to come back or take a lead like the 6th and 7th innings by Curtis Granderson and Alex Rodriguez. The Yankees were 1 for 4 with runners in scoring position.
