Game 69: Five-Run First Does Pettitte In

New York Yankees 4 — New York Mets 6

Five-run 1st inning was too much to overcome in tonight’s 6-4 loss to the New York Mets.

Andy Pettitte started for the Yankees tonight and he struggled right away. A two-run single and a Nick Swisher-assisted three-run home run made a five-run deficit for the Yankees bats to overcome. This one bad inning was the only blemish on the veteran left-hander’s line. He ended up going 6 innings with 6 strikeouts and just the 5 runs allowed being the only damage he had. Cory Wade surrendered one more run on a David Wright run-scoring double in the 7th while Clay Rapada and Cody Eppley combined for a scoreless 8th.

The Yankees are known for scoring via the home run and they made it evident in tonight’s game too. All of their runs came on home runs tonight. Alex Rodriguez started the Yankees scoring with a solo home run to straight center field right into the apple beyond the center field wall in the 6th inning. Andruw Jones went deep to left field for a solo home run in the 7th. Robinson Cano hit a no-doubt two-run home run to right field over the bullpens. The Yankees were 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position and seemed to have a runner on all of the first 4 innings but were unable to make anything of it. This loss has given the Yankees a 3-game losing streak, their longest of this season.
