Game 74: Losses In A Win

Cleveland Indians 4 — New York Yankees 5

With the bad news of CC Sabathia’s injury, Andy Pettitte exits today’s 5-4 win over the Cleveland Indians.

Andy Pettitte started today’s game and only went 4 innings. In those 4 innings, Pettitte looked dominant as he struck out 7 with 2 runs, 1 earned, on 3 hits. Former Yankee Shelley Duncan brought in the unearned run in the 2nd inning with a run-scoring doubleย  following an error on Alex Rodriguez. Pettitte’s outing was cut short by a comebacker that hit him on the left ankle by Casey Kotchman to open the 5th inning. One pitch later,ย  Pettitte exited the game calling upon the bullpen earlier than it appeared they would be needed. With the bullpen entered early, 2 runs would be brought in off of a combination of Cody Eppley and Clay Rapada. Freddy Garcia, initially scheduled to start in place of the injured CC Sabathia would come in for 2.1 perfect innings. David Robertson would pitch the 8th inning and hold onto the save opportunity for Rafael Soriano. In the 9th inning, Soriano clearly didn’t have his best stuff as two singles and a walk loaded the bases and with 2 outs, he walked in 1 run with a 2-run lead and ended up getting a fly out to close out the win and sweep of the Indians.

The Yankees offense was fueled behind 2 big contributors, Eric Chavez and Robinson Cano. In the 4th inning, Chavez brought in two with a run-scoring double to give the Yankees the early lead. Then, after they lost the lead in the 5th, Robinson Cano hit a two-run home run to left to retrieve the lead for the Yankees with his 7th home run in 10 games. Finally,in the 8th inning, Eric Chavez drove in the Yankees 5th run, which turned out to be the decisive run in today’s win.
