Game 75: Bullpen Blows It

Chicago White Sox 4 — New York Yankees 3

The usually reliable bullpen falters in the 9th in tonight’s 4-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

Ivan Nova pitched a strong 7.1 innings of one-run baseball in tonight’s game. The lone run was a solo home run to the short porch in right field by Alejandro De Aza. With the recent turn of events involving the Yankees pitching staff, this outing was a reassuring sign that the Yankees pitchers could stay within themselves and keep the Yankees winning ways alive.ย  However the bullpen did not appear in the same fashion. Boone Logan and Cody Eppley got 2 outs and finished off the 8th inning when Nova exited with the lead. Oddly, Clay Rapada was called upon in the 9th inning. Rafael Soriano was deemed unavailable after pitching a lot recently. David Robertson was called upon afterย  single off of Eppley and an error on Rapada in the 9th. With 2 on and no outs, David Robertson ended up surrendering a game-winning three-run home run toย  Dayan Viciedo that turned a 3-1 lead into a 4-3 deficit.

The Yankees offense didn’t get to rookie Dylan Axelrod until the 5th inning. A single by Curtis Granderson with back-to-back doubles gave the Yankees an early two-run lead. Then an 8th inning solo home run by Mark Teixeira supplied the seemingly required home run that leads to a typical Yankees win. Clearly that was not the case as the bullpen fell apart but the Yankees offense could not take advantage of the opportunities as they were 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position as they saw their 5-game winning streak end.

Win – Hector Santiago (2-1)

Loss – David Robertson (0-2)
