Game 79: Costly Error

New York Yankees 3 — Tampa Bay Rays 4

A rare and costly error in the 7th was the difference in the 4-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Freddy Garcia was called upon to start and many were not sure what to expect from the veteran pitcher. Garcia made it to the 4th inning before giving up his first run, a solo home run by B.J. Upton and the final batter he faced after 5.1 innings of work was a game-tying solo home run to Carlos Pena. Freddy Garcia looked pretty good through his start tonight as he just gave up the two runs from the home run. The second home run may have been just a sign that he had reached the end of his outing with 74 pitches. The bullpen had another hint of struggles in tonight’s game and it was Boone Logan and David Robertson. Boone Logan’s walk and wild pitch put a runner in scoring position, after he got the 2nd out of the inning, David Robertson was called upon for the last out. A run-scoring double tied the game and a slow rolling ball that got past Gold Glove first baseman Mark Teixeira for his first error of the season and it brought in what would be the game-winning run.

The Yankees got to rookie Matt Moore early as he gave up 4 hits to the first 5 batters he faced and was trailing by 2 early. But he would settle down and not give up a run until Curtis Granderson’s sacrifice fly in the 7th inning. A pair of 1-2-3 innings were done by reliever Joel Peralta and All-Star Fernando Rodney to give the Yankees the loss after a rare error by the usually sure-handed Mark Teixeira.

Win – Matt Moore (5-5)
