Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 5 — New York Yankees 11
On Jackie Robinson Day, Ivan Nova got through 6 innings in tonight’s 11-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Whenever the starting pitcher gets taken out of the game before the end of the 3rd inning, it’s a bad sign. Angels starting pitcher went just 2.2 innings after giving up 5 runs on 5 hits with 3 walks. But the bullpen couldn’t stop the offense of the Yankees, including a laser of a home run to right field from Derek Jeter and a monster of a home run by Raul Ibanez that nearly landed in the upper deck in right field, a feat not achieved by any Yankee until tonight.
Ivan Nova’s 6 innings of work were not pretty but when you have this kind of offense behind you, you don’t have to be perfect. He gave up 4 runs on 8 hits, including two home runs. Rafael Soriano came in the game in the 7th inning and struggled with control as he went just 0.2 innings and gave up a run on 2 hits and 2 walks while leaving the bases loaded for David Robertson. Robertson escaped the jam handed to him in the 7th and had a scoreless 8th as well.
Win – Ivan Nova (2-0)
Loss – Jerome Williams (0-1)
