Game 97: Hot Bats On Hot Night

With the temperatures reaching 100, the Yankees bats got hot too. The Yankees scored a total of 17 runs amidst last night’s heat wave through New York.

The Yankees managed to score a total of 14 runs in the 2nd & 3rd innings last night. The highlights of this tremendous outburst took place in the 3rd as Nick Swisher went deep for a three-run home run and Mark Teixeira outdid him with a grand slam later in the same inning. 10 of these 14 runs were on the line of starting pitcher Trevor Cahill, who has always had problems when facing the Yankees.

With a big lead, pitchers can be a little more lenient with their location as a grand slam (or in this case 3 grand slams) would have erased the 12-run lead given to starter Phil Hughes. Unfortunately, the heat of the night and the interest in improvement as he makes his way back from the disabled list knocked him out before he could take the complete benefit of the run support he received by getting the W. Hughes went 4.1 innings (2 outs shy of the required 5 innings for a win) and allowed 5 runs (7 in total as he left 2 runners on base) with a pitch count of 98.

Nick Swisher tied a career-high with 5 RBI’s last night. Derek Jeter drove in 3 and Mark Teixeira’s grand slam gave him 4 for the night. Another highlight of the night was for Brandon Laird, who got his first career hit and RBI to end the runs of the night.
