The Milwaukee Brewers are visiting Yankee Stadium for the first time since 1997, when they were still a part of the American League. An eventful first inning and red-hot Nick Swisher ruined their return visit.
The bottom of the first inning featured a hit-batter, misplayed fly ball that was turned into a triple, fielder’s choice, an over-shift on a right handed batter, a walk, and a Jorge Posada broken-bat infield single. What resulted was an early 2-0 lead for the Yankees that they eventually turned into a 12-2 win.
The second inning was a more conventional rally; Mark Teixeira hit his league-leading 24th home run and Nick Swisher capped it off with a three-run home run. In June, Nick has 7 home runs and an OPS of 1.065. His home run tonight was another big hit from the left side, a side he had struggled mightily from in April and May.
Jorge Posada also added an RBI single in the sixth, adding to an already lopsided score. Much like Swisher, Posada is having a monster June— his slash splits were .393/.435/.589 coming into tonight’s game over his last 19.
Tomorrow, the Yankees will send AJ Burnett to the mound versus a very tough Shaun Marcum, whom the Yankees have owned. (Marcum holds a 1-4 record with a 6.55 ERA over his career vs. New York.) AJ pitched descent enough to win last time out against Colorado, but was taken out after 6.1 IP because of a high pitch count that included five walks. If AJ wants to succeed versus Milwaukee, a good fastball hitting team, he is going to need to limit the walks and be able to thrown his curveball for strikes—which somehow always seems to be the report on Burnett.
