Preview: Derek Jeter’s Curtain Call (9/28/14)

The legend comes to an end and Michael Pineda (4-5, 1.93 ERA) and Clay Buchholz (8-10, 5.31 ERA) get a front row seat. Pineda has come a long way since the pine tar incident against the Red Sox earlier in the year. His last time out he threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings holding the Orioles to just one hit and at one point retired 13 in a row.

Buchholz had a shutout going against the Rays for seven innings until a two run double in the eighth that lead to five earned runs. Four of his last six outings have been quality.

This game marks Derek Jeter’s 153rd game at Fenway, the most by a Yankee, passing Lou Gehrig and Mickey Mantle. It will also be 46 years TO THE DAY that Mantle played the final game of his career, also at Fenway! You can’t script this stuff folks. He was emotional during his final game in the Bronx but he doesn’t know what this game will bring. “I don’t know how it will feel. I can’t imagine it feeling like it did in New York,” Jeter said. “That has nothing to do where I am, that’s just where I played my entire career. In New York was as good as it gets. This rivalry has been intense throughout the years. It doesn’t get any more intense than this. For most of my career, the teams have been one and two in the division and been fighting for first place. It has always been fun to come here and when they come to New York, it is almost like a postseason matchup.”

Jeter has a .291 career average with 26 home runs and 137 RBIs in 282 career games against the rival Sox. “If there is anywhere else to play besides New York, I guess it is only fitting that it is here in Boston,” Jeter said. “All of the times I’ve played here and the rivalry. If I can’t do it in New York, this is the next best place, I guess.”

Notes on the game

Pineda is 1-2 with a 7.50 ERA in 3 career starts against the Red Sox.

Jeter has made 139 regular season starts at Fenway at shortstop, the second most all time among visiting players.
