Preview: Yankees @ Angels (6/16/13)

It’s up to CC Sabathia (6-5, 4.07 ERA) to answer the Yankees prayers and stop the skid against the Angels and Jered Weaver (1-2, 3.77 ERA). Sabathia took a step back in his last start after 2 solid outings, allowing six runs (two homers) in a loss to the A’s. His fastball velocity has come back a bit, but he struggled with command in Oakland. “It’s disappointing. It’s definitely frustrating,” Sabathia said after the start. “After having two good ones and feeling really good, just not having it today is frustrating. I’ll be ready to go in five days.”

Weaver’s last start on Monday was cut short due to rain against the Orioles. He lasted 83 pitches through 5 2/3 innings. He was charged with four runs on six hits and a walk. “It was frustrating,” Weaver said. “I heard the weather report and just didn’t want to go out there and throw three innings and have it stop. It kind of feels like a wasted opportunity, I guess you can say, but weather always plays a part in the game, no matter where you’re at. Obviously, it showed tonight. Like I said, you can’t make any excuses. Both teams have to play in it.”

Mo and the Angels, a holy reunion.

Mariano Rivera registered his first career save against the Angels on May 17, 1996, and also made his Major League debut at Angel Stadium against the then California Angels on May 23, 1995. “I remember that. It was great,” Rivera said. “I lost the game, but it was a good experience, my first time in the big leagues. It was outstanding. It was the beginning of a long career.”

Notes on the game.

In 11 career starts against the Yankees, Weaver is 6-2 with a 4.97 ERA.

Against the AL West this season, the Yankees are 7-11.

Yankees have lost 5 straight.

Game kicks off at 3:35 PM (EST) on Yes
