Preview: Yankees at Indians (7/9/14)

i

Brandon McCarthy makes his first start for the Yankees since being traded from Arizon for Vidal Nuno. Josh Tomlin (4-6, 4.11 ERA) will be on the hill for the Tribe. McCarthy won his last two starts for the DBacks, allowing a combined three runs in 12 2/3 innings. He has spent the majority of his nine year Major League career as a starter and is better at throwing more pitches and lasting deep into games than Nuno. “It’s something that I try to take pride in,” McCarthy said. “Even if I’m getting hit, it’s just, get deep in the game. But it’s something that, especially when I’m going well, you just try to get as deep as I can, take the pressure off the bullpen, take the pressure off the pitching coaches and the other coaches.”

Tomlin’s last start against KC was going well until a homer from Mike Moustakas spoiled it. He finished with five runs allowed on 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings, the third time he’s surrendered that many runs in his last four outings. However, he has been solid enough this season to keep his spot in the rotation since being promoted from Triple-A Columbus in early May. “Josh Tomlin’s been everything he’s supposed to be,” Terry Francona said.
