Preview: Yankees at Mariners (6/12/14)

Chase Whitley (1-0, 2.42 ERA) goes for the Seattle sweep against fellow rookie Roenis Elias (5-4, 3.64 ERA). Whitley is coming off his first Major League win against the Royals going seven innings and allowing five hits and just two runs. He had gotten no decisions in his first four starts and never went past five innings.

The rookie Roenis is coming off his two longest starts of the season, a three hit shutout of the Tigers followed by 7 2/3 innings in a 7-4 win over the Rays. He beat the Yankees on May 1st, 4-2, with 10 strikeouts in seven innings. “I felt really good out there,” Elias said through an interpreter. “I’m doing what I’m capable of doing, and just to come out here and do the things that have made me successful in the past, I’m working hard to keep that going.” Elias used his changeup in those two games and like what he saw,  “It helped tremendously, especially in the first inning against the Rays, when they were jumping on the first pitch,” he said. “To go with the changeup and throw them off balance helped, because batters have been sitting on fastballs lately on first pitch. With just the way scouting reports are, everybody knows I’ve got a fastball and curve early in the count. So you have to make those adjustments and get ahead in the count.”

The Yankees got some familiar faces back in the bullpen on Wednesday. Shawn Kelley was activated from the DL and they got David Huff, a Yankee last year, back from the Giants for cash considerations. “It just gives me more versatility,” Joe Girardi said. “Gives me another late inning guy with the two that we’ve had, that we’ve been using a lot, maybe you don’t have one one day, as I said, I think all these guys are interchangeable. It gives us more depth.” Matt Daley was optioned to Triple-A and Wade LeBlanc was designated for assignment.

Notes on the game

Elias has pitched 81 2/3 innings this season, second behind Felix Hernandez.

Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to 15 games on Wednesday, the longest active streak in the Majors.
