Preview: Yankees at Orioles (7/13/14)

Chase Whitley (4-2, 4.94 ERA) gets the last start of the first half against Kevin Gausman (3-2, 3.51 ERA) in the rubber match against the O’s. The battered and bruised Yankee rotation has thrust Whitley back into the job. He only lasted three innings his last time out against the Twins, giving up eight hits and four runs. The Bombers would end up winning the game but his bad outing caused him to be sent to the pen in favor of newly acquired Brandon McCarthy.

Gausman has been back and fourth between the Minors and the Majors all season and his year has been just as up and down. However, in his latest stint in the minors he didn’t throw a single pitch. His recent call up is in place of Ubaldo Jimenez who landed on the 15 day DL. “Any time you play the Yankees here, it’s always fun,” said Gausman. “I’m sure the place is going to be packed. It’s going to be fun. I’ll just try to end things on a positive note.”

Slowly but surley, Michael Pineda is working his way back to the Bronx. He threw a 25 pitch bullpen session on Friday and reported no issues. Barring any set backs, best case scenario is a mid August return. But this is the Yankees we’re talking about, their middle name is setback.

Notes on the game

Whitley has allowed 17 earned runs in nine innings over his last three starts.

The Orioles have won 9 of their last 12.

First pitch at 8:05 pm on ESPN.
