Preview: Yankees at Orioles (9/14/14)

Hiroki Kuroda (10-9, 3.91 ERA) and Chris Tillman (12-5, 3.36 ERA) close out the series at Camden Yards. Since the break, Kuroda has cut back on throwing between starts trying to avoid a late season collapse like last season. That didn’t help his last outing, which was his shortest of the season against the Rays, allowing nine hits in just 3 1/3 innings.

Tillman went five innings in Tuesday’s win against the Sox allowing one run on six hits while K-ing five.

The Yankees are fighting for their postseason lives and Saturday’s win put them 4 1/2 games behind Seattle and Kansas City, who are tied for the second AL Wild Card spot. “I don’t think you have any choice but to keep fighting,” Joe Girardi said. “Other teams are having their issues. Why not? You run off a streak, and all of a sudden you’re back in it.”

Girardi doesn’t expect to have Chase Headley back until Monday at the earliest because of Headley taking a fastball on the chin Thursday. “With any head injury, it’s better to be safe than sorry, so we’re going to make sure that everything checks out,” Headley said. “I have great confidence in the staff that they’re going to look out for what’s best for me. I don’t want to miss any games that I don’t have to.”
