Preview: Yankees at Rays (9/17/14)

Brandon McCarthy (6-4, 2.54 ERA) and Alex Cobb (9-7, 2.75 ERA) face off again at the Trop. McCarthy is coming off a great outing not allowing a run to the Orioles on four hits over seven innings, walking none and striking out six. He lost to the Rays on August 15th, giving up four runs ,two earned, in 6 1/3 innings as the Yankees were shut out (shock.)

Cobb had a no hitter against the Yankees in the Bronx when he pitched 7 1/3 hitless innings before Chris Young doubled to end the no-no. He will be facing the Yanks for the second time in less then a week. “I always kind of wondered how to go about it,” Cobb said. “Even looking at their lineup Monday, it was a completely different lineup. They’ve got a bunch of other guys back in the lineup that I didn’t face last time. That might help a little bit, although they’re top of the line hitters. “I think, try not to overthink it too much and just kind of execute pitches, rather than try to think back to what you did to them last game. You’ve got to realize they’ve faced five or six starting pitchers since then, so they’re not totally locked into remembering what you did to them last time.”

The Yankees are planning on Masahiro Tanaka starting on Sunday against the Blue Jays. He had no issues after throwing 65 pitches in a simulated game Monday against instructional league hitters. “More than anything, I want to see if my body is able to go fully on a Major League mound,” Tanaka said. “That’s by far most important to me. Also, to be able to contribute in the team’s win would be something important to me, too.”

Notes on the game

Martin Prado had an emergency appendectomy on Tuesday and has been placed on the 60 day DL.

Mark Teixeira was held out of the lineup Tuesday with discomfort in his surgically repaired right wrist.
