Preview: Yankees at Red Sox (9/27/14)

Masahiro Tanaka (13-4, 2.47 ERA) makes his second start off the DL in the second to last game of the year against Joe Kelly (3-2, 4.00 ERA). Tanaka made his first start since July 8th and gave up just one run to the Blue Jays over 5 1/3 innings. Joe Girardi says he will be limited to 85 pitches this game. “It should give me some confidence and then allow me to go back to Japan and work out the way I want to,” Tanaka said. “Compared to the first time after the injury, I’m not as worried.”

Kelly has .200/.319/.300 slash line against in nine starts since joining the team on July 31st. He held the Orioles to two runs and three hits in seven innings his last time out.

Derek Jeter plans to be the designated hitter in this game and said if he couldn’t finish his career at Yankee Stadium, he is happy it’s at Fenway. And Despite their heated rivalry over the years, David Ortiz was cheering on Jeter as he watched from the clubhouse on Thursday. “I think it’s perfect,” said Ortiz. “This rivalry is a rivalry that, what can I tell you, the fans are involved in it but it’s not like the fans personally hated him. It was like, ‘This is my team, that is yours.’ But everybody has much respect for Jeter. Everybody knows he’s the face of baseball. Everybody would love to watch him play.”

Notes on the game

Jacoby Ellsbury feels ok to play the final two games, but Girardi will bench him for the year.

Derek Jeter will tie Mickey Mantle for the most games played by a Yankee at Fenway Park with 152.

1:05 pm on Fox.
