Preview: Yankees @ Athletics (6/12/13)

Phil Hughes (3-4, 4.80 ERA) looks to even the series against Dan Straily (3-2, 4.67 ERA) and the Athletics in game 2 tonight in Oakland. Hughes was sharp his last time out against the Mariners, holding them to an unearned run over seven innings to pick up his first win in five starts. “I mixed stuff up a lot more,” Hughes said of his slider and changeup after the outing. “That made things a lot easier for my fastball … to climb the ladder later in counts.”
He pitched eight scoreless frames against the A’s on May 4 in the Bronx.

In Straily’s last start against Chicago last Thursday, he allowed four runs on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts in seven innings. Before that, he had allowed two runs in his previous 19 innings.

Oakland left fielder Yoenis Cespedes left Tuesday’s game after tweaking his left hamstring on a first-inning groundout.

Notes on the game.

Oakland has won 19 of their last 24.

Hughes hasn’t made it past the 5th inning four times this year.

On a side note: Derek Jeter is continuing to hit off a tee in Tampa, as well as fielding ground balls on the grass. He is scheduled to see the doctor who operated on his ankle today in Charlotte. He could be cleared for full baseball activities after that visit.

Game kicks off at 10:05 PM (EST) on Yes
