Preview: Yankees @ Mariners (6/06/13)

Phil Hughes (2-4, 5.37 ERA) starts off the 10 game West Coast run against Aaron Harang (2-5, 5.82 ERA) and the Mariners. Hughes is looking to bounce back from his worst outing of the season back on May 15 in a rematch with Seattle. He was beaten up for seven runs on six hits and two walks with just two outs.

Harang has allowed just one earned run over his last 15 innings as he’s rebounded from a rough stretch. The Yankees are the only team he has never faced in his career after a scheduled start two weeks ago was scratched.

Ichiro Suzuki got an infield hit in New York’s 6-4 win over Cleveland on Wednesday. The hit gave him 49 for the season and 2,655 in the MLB. On top of the 1,278 that he had in the Nippon Professional Baseball of Japan, Ichiro has 3,933 hits, just 67 short of 4,000.

Ichiro is aware of the significance of 4,000 hits. He knows that only two men (Pete Rose and Ty Cobb) have reached that plateau before, but he said it’s too early to talk about him becoming the third guy. “Today I’m not thinking about that. I’ve come to this point by doing it this way: day to day, every day. If I could get 67 hits in three or four days, I’d think about it. But it’s still a little bit too far out to be thinking about that.”

Notes on the game.

The sweep of the Indians was the fifth series sweep this season for the Yankees, last year they had 10 total.

When scoring 4 runs or less the Yankees are 15-25. When scoring 5 or more they are 19-0, the best record in the league.

Seattle took two out of three games at Yankee Stadium from May 14-16, outscoring New York, 18-8. After this series, the two won’t meet again during the regular season.

The Bombers are now just 1.5 games behind Boston, while the Orioles slipped to third place (2.5 games behind) with their loss to Houston last night.

Game kicks off at 10:10 PM (ET) on YES
