Nathan Eovaldi (1-0, 3.12 ERA) gets the ball for the rubber match against Jon Niese (2-0, 1.50 ERA) and the Mets. Eovaldi had his best start of the season his last time out picking up his first win in pinstripes. He held the Tigers to one run on eight hits over seven innings and 4 Ks.
Niese was coasting through 6 scoreless innings against the Braves until giving up a solo shot in the seventh. It was the only run he allowed on four hits and five Ks. It was a solid outing but he was upset he issued four walks.
Niese was ejected from Friday night’s game despite not even being on the field. He wasn’t happy with home plate umpire Doug Eddings’ strike zone and was tossed after voicing his opinion from the bench.
Tidbits:
Mark Teixeira homered on Saturday making it four in four games. He now has eight home runs with just four doubles and three singles.
Eovaldi is 1-3 with a 4.62 ERA in seven career starts against the Mets.
Juan Lagares has hit safely in 15 of 18 games this season.
