Preview: Yankees vs Orioles (6/21/14)

Vidal Nuno Yankees_ Indians 2013

Vidal Nuno (1-3, 5.90 ERA) and Bud Norris (6-5, 3.73 ERA) will face off in a matinee at the stadium. Nuno was roughed up for eight runs in three innings by the A’s during his last start. His struggles have spiked his ERA up to 7.43 during his three starts in June. The Yankees are 1-5 overall when he starts at home. The Yankees are 5-6 in games Nuno starts, 1-5 coming at home. When asked if he’s going to replace Nuno in the lineup, Joe Girardi said “I don’t ever put that type of pressure on people. They understand what is on the line every day, and they understand that this is a performance based business.”

Nuno worked on his cutter in the pen Wednesday, which he said is key to his success. He said he is not worried about pitching for his job, but he has been thinking about it. “It’s the nature of the game,” he said. “It’s in the back of my mind. I’ve been working on stuff day in and day out, but I’m just going to go out there, enjoy it and have fun. If I can’t do that, I’m just going to keep fighting and see where it takes me.”

Norris has been excellent for the O’s lately and he is coming off his third consecutive win. He held Toronto to a single run over 6 2/3 innings.  He has a 1.17 WHIP to go along with his 3.73 ERA in his first full season with Baltimore.

Since coming back from the DL, Shawn Kelley hasn’t quite looked like himself. In five appearances, he has allowed three earned runs over just 3 2/3 innings for a 7.36 ERA. He looked better in his appearance Friday in the series opener, throwing 1 1/3 scoreless innings. “I don’t get overly concerned,” said Girardi. “Obviously, we need to get him back on a roll. It’s important to get him going. It’s frustrating for a player when you’re pitching so well and then you get hurt and maybe you’re not quite as sharp as you’ve been, but he’ll get back on track. That’s not something I’m too concerned about.”

Notes on the game

Kelly Johnson didn’t play the series opener after he took a bunt off his fingers. He could be available for game two.

Brian Roberts collected his 1,500th hit Friday night.

First pitch at 1:05 PM on Yes.
