Preview: Yankees vs Orioles (9/13/14)

Shane Greene (4-3, 3.57 ERA) and Miguel Gonzalez (9-7, 3.22 ERA) battle it out in Baltimore. Greene allowed five hits and walked three in five innings against the Royals but took a loss despite not allowing an earned run.

Gonzalez held the Red Sox scoreless over 6 1/3 innings on Monday. He has allowed two or fewer runs in nine of his last 10 starts.

The O’s could clinch the AL East by Monday. They brought their magic number down to five on Friday sweeping the double header. “I guarantee there’s a lot of people having a tougher 24 hours than I just had, I can tell you that,” Buck Showalter said. “That’s why we come to games, to see what happens.”

All tests came back negative for Chase Headley and he is clear to play. He was hit in the face by a 96 mph pitch by Jake McGee on Thursday and required two stitches on his chin. X-rays showed no fractures. “I was just extremely lucky,” Headley said. “Talking to the doctors, to be hit direct with that hard of a fastball, there’s really no reason that I should be as good as I am. I’m fortunate, blessed. I’m sore, but it could have been much worse.”

Notes on the game

Greene threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings at Oriole Park in his only start against them.

The Orioles are 10-3 against the Yanks this season.
