Preview: Yankees vs Orioles (9/22/14)

Michael Pineda (3-5, 2.15 ERA) makes his last home start of the year against Wei-Yin Chen (16-4, 3.58 ERA) and the playoff bound Orioles. Pineda made his first start off the DL against the O’s. He’s coming off a loss, thanks to his offense, to the Rays after allowing ONE earned run in 5 1/3 innings.

Chen leads the American League with an .800 winning percentage. He hasn’t since lost August 6th and has a 2.64 ERA during that stretch. “I didn’t really make any big change from three years ago, but one thing different is that I now am truly focused on every at-bat,” Chen said. “Before, sometimes I’d think about maybe I want to strike out this batter or do something else, but now I just try to focus on every at-bat, trying to get an out.”

After 382 games at the new Yankee Stadium and 1,429 in the Bronx total, Derek Jeter has just four more. This will be the final home series of the captain. There won’t be any days off for the 40 year old since the Yanks are 4.5 games behind the Orioles for the second wild card “Obviously, some of those days are going to be DH days to keep him going,” Joe Girardi said. “He had Monday off, but now he’s swinging the bat and I’m going to keep him in there.”

Notes on the game

Jacoby Ellsbury and Mark Teixeira could return during this series.

Brett Gardner hit his 16th homer of the year Sunday, which was number 15,000 for the Yankees franchise. No other team has more than 14,000.
