David Phelps (4-4, 3.87 ERA) will go up against The Yu Darvish (9-5, 2.88 ERA) in the third game against Texas. Phelps started his second half strong, throwing 98 pitches through 6 1/3 innings to hold the Reds to three runs on six hits. He tied his season high seven Ks and hasn’t pitched fewer than six innings in all of July. “He has kind of gone unnoticed,” Joe Girardi said. “He’s doing a really good job in our starting rotation. It took us a little time to get him going, to get his arm strength back for 100 pitches, but he’s been really consistent for us.”

The ace started the second half with a bang, striking out a season high tying 12 Blue Jays over 6 2/3 innings. “It’s really hard to be consistent; you have to know your body, and you have to know yourself,” Darvish said. “I think I’ve been able to do that because I studied myself and studied the other guys.”
